Italy gets off to a strong start: Girelli knocks out Argentina
Bertolini’s Italy started the World Cup with a convincing victory. The Azzurre beat Argentina 1-0 in the first match of the group stage, thanks to a goal scored in the 87th minute by Cristiana Girelli.
After a first half poor in chances (two goals cancelled for offside to Caruso and Giacinti), in the second half the national team created several chances without being able to break through.
In the end of the match came the decisive change: the stainless Girelli entered the field in place of Dragoni, and it was the veteran Azzurra who found the winning goal in the 87th minute with a precise header off Boattin’s cross.
At the expiration Durante saved it all on Bonasegundo, allowing Italy to get off to an immediate start with a win in the 2023 World Cup. Italy will return to the field on Saturday, July 29, when they play Sweden, who won their other match with South Africa and now lead the group together with the Azzurre.
