Jannik Sinner wants to become the third
Matteo Berrettini came close in 2021, losing the Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic. Today the Italian who seems to be the best equipped to win a Slam title is Jannik Sinner, not only because on the London grass, a decade ago, he hoisted himself up to the semifinals, which he also lost to the Serb (who then, however, succumbed in the last act to Carlos Alcaraz). Next opportunity for the South Tyrolean is the U.S. Open.
The only two Italian tennis players who boast Slam singles titles in the men’s sphere are Nicola Pietrangeli, who was a winner at Roland Garros in 1959 (defeating South African Ian Vermaak in the final) and 1960 (last act with Chilean Luis Ayala), and Adriano Panatta, who lifted the trophy in Paris in 1976, imposing himself over U.S. Harold Solomon in 4 sets with the score of 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
Among women, on the other hand, came the Roland Garros victories of Francesca Schiavone in 2010 (beating Samantha Stosur 6-4, 7-6 in the final) and Flavia Pennetta at the 2015 U.S. Open: the Apulian bent Roberta Vinci 7-6, 6-2 in a historic Italian derby.
