Jannik Sinner’s return to the field is approaching
The moment tennis fans have been anxiously awaiting is about to arrive: after the semifinal he reached at Wimbledon and the subsequent long break, not from training but from tournaments, Jannik Sinner is about to return to the court, and he will do so next week in the Canadian Open, the sixth Masters 1000 of the season, which this year will be played in Toronto, in the usual alternation with Montreal, where the women will play instead.
On the tournament’s entry list, Jannik, currently world No. 8, is seventh: ahead of him, in fact, is only Novak Djokovic, who forfeited the North American tournament, perhaps still burned by his loss in the final at the Championships to Carlos Alcaraz after beating Sinner in the semifinals. For the South Tyrolean, 22 years old next August 16, it will be an excellent opportunity to gain world ranking points.
In Canada he has in fact never done very well so far: in both 2021 and 2022 he enjoyed a first-round bye but two years ago he lost immediately in the second round to Australian James Duckworth, while last year in Montreal after winning against Adrian Mannarino he was defeated by Pablo Carreno Busta.
The Canadian Masters 1000 will also be an excellent opportunity for Sinner to earn points in the Race ranking, the one that only puts together the scores obtained this year and is used to qualify for the ATP Finals at the end of the year in Turin. Jannik is currently sixth and his lead over the first of the outcasts, ninth, which is Taylor Fritz, is 885 points. Not a completely safe margin but still a good lead.
