Italy aside, Australia and New Zealand’s women’s World Cups are already record-breaking
There are those who mourn, for example the national teams going home after the group stage, Brazil and Italy above all, and there are those who do, and these are the organizers of this edition of the World Cup reserved for women.
When the knockout phase has yet to begin, the Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand has already surpassed the spectators of the entire 2019 edition played in France. This was announced by FIFA.
In fact, after 48 matches, the attendance in the stadiums was 1.222 million, with an average of more than 25,000 people per match and a 29 percent increase compared to the edition four years ago at this stage of the tournament. In 2019, spectators for the entire World Cup were about 1.1 million; however, there were fewer teams (24 versus 32) and therefore fewer matches (52 versus 64).
Several matches sold out, such as Australia’s opener in Sydney against Ireland, played in front of more than 75,000 people. Others, especially in New Zealand, have attracted fewer people. More than 1.715 million tickets have been sold so far, far exceeding Fifa’s original target of 1.3 million.
