Matteo Berrettini, more bad news after knockout: slumps in rankings

Yet another injury forced Matteo Berrettini to raise the white flag at the Us Open. The Roman tennis player had to surrender during the match against Arthur Rinderknech, when in the ninth game of the second partial he suffered a bad ankle sprain and è was forced to leave the court in a wheelchair.

Berrettini, who has been struggling with physical problems for a year and a half now, will pay dearly for the forfeit: the Blue in the Atp ranking è plummeted 29 positions, to 65th place.

"There’è no peace for Matteo Berrettini! Incredible", wrote bitterly the'former Italian tennis player and Sky technical commentator Paolo Bertolucci.

In the coming hours, the Azzurro will undergo some instrumental examinations in which the extent of the injury will be better evaluated. Berrettini is likely to miss Davis Cup commitments with Italy scheduled for Sept. 12-17: Lorenzo Sonego will take his place.
