Carlos Alcaraz extinguishes Matteo Arnaldi’s dreams in New York
Matteo Arnaldi’s path to the Us Open is interrupted by Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16. The world number one won in three sets (6-3 6-3 6-4) against the Ligurian tennis player after two hours of play.
In the first set the balance is broken in the sixth game: Arnaldi has to face three consecutive break points, two he saves with his service but on the third è he is forced to break serve. Alcaraz goes up 4-2 and keeps the break until the final 6-3. In the second set, however, the break came immediately for the Spaniard, who repeated it in the ninth game, putting himself ahead two sets to zero.
The Ligurian tennis player did not want to give up and even went ahead by a break in the third set. Alcaraz, however, reacts of immediate, brings the score back to even; and in the last game he snatches service to zero from the blue, earning the quarterfinals.
Arnaldi nevertheless exits the Us Open with his head held high, and from next Monday he will enter the top 50 of the ATP ranking. Alcaraz awaits the winner of the match between Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner, scheduled for the night.
