Jannik Sinner skips Davis Cup: Giovanni Malagò speaks out
After much criticism, comes the stance of the CONI to try to bring back some calm.
Jannik Sinner at the Davis Cup will not be there, with reasons he himself wanted to explain. His decision has generated several less than benevolent reactions to the South Tyrolean, in a situation that did not è change after he himself shed light on the reasons for the decision. Soì è Giovanni Malagò, president of Coni, intervened to try to calm the waters.
"I certainly won’t be the one to put even a drop of gasoline on the fire. In fact, on the fire I try to throw water. These situations exist in all sports. On the risks of injury there'è a specific issue, and on this there'è no shadow of a doubt", said Malagò regarding Sinner’s withdrawal from the Davis Cup.
Sinner himself had explained on Instagram: "Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to recover after the tournaments in America, and unfortunately I will not be able to be part of the team in Bologna. È always an honor to play for our country and I am convinced to return to the national team as soon as possible. Big good luck to the guys, see you". " We wish Jannik a speedy recovery, we know how much he cares about Davis, he has already proven it. We respect his decision, I am sure we will have him available in the future", had been the comment of Filippo Volandri, captain of the national tennis team.
Among the hardest on him had been Nicola Pietrangeli. "I do not want to get into the merits of the Jannik Sinner affair, I speak in general; I say that representing one’s country è the highest aspiration of a sportsman, è an honor anyway, regardless of the result. Those who refuse and then go play a tournament elsewhere should be disqualified", he had told Ansa.
