Vuelta 2023: Jonas Vingegaard triumphs in Bejes, Sepp Kuss is getting closer
Jonas Vingegaard confirms strong uphill
The final week of the Vuelta 2023 began with a spectacular victory by Jonas Vingegaard in the 16th stage of the Spanish stage race, 120.5 kilometers from Liencres to Bejes. The Dane of Jumbo-Visma was 43" ahead of New Zealand’s Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates) and 49" Wout Poels (Bahrain-Victorious).
Vingegaard thus confirms himself as strong on the climbs and brings the current holder of the red jersey, teammate Sepp Kuss, not just a little closer to the finish line today after 1'05" the American now has a 29" lead right over Vingegaard, while behind them is another Jumbo-Visma athlete, Primoz Roglic, 1'33" distant from the leader of the standings.
On Wednesday, another not easy stage, in which the cards could be dealt further: they will start from Ribadesella, a town in Asturias, to arrive after 124.5 kilometers in Angliru, in one of the most difficult mountainous areas to climb in Europe.
As for the jerseys, in addition to the red one held by Sepp Kuss, the polka-dotted one of best climber remains the prerogative of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step), while Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) wears the white one of best youngster.
