In Vienna Jannik Sinner gets revenge on Frances Tiafoe and goes to the semifinals
In the quarterfinals of the Vienna ATP 500, taking revenge against an opponent who in the Austrian capital two years ago had beaten him when the match was practically lost, Jannik Sinner, world No. 4 and the No. 2 seed, beat with a score of 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 20 minutes of play the U.S. Frances Tiafoe, number 7 in the seeding and 14 in the world.
In the first set, the 22-year-old South Tyrolean native of Innichen and raised in Sesto broke Tiafoe immediately in the second game and held the break lead until the end of the partial but had to save two break points in the seventh game.
In the second set Sinner makes the decisive break in the seventh game, in the next game he nullifies a counterbreak ball, at 5-3 he has a match point, misses it but closes immediately afterwards by holding serve to zero.
Now Jannik in the semifinals will face Andrey Rublev of Russia, while on the other side of the scoreboard there will be another Russian, Daniil Medvedev, against Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece: the top four seeds of the tournament have arrived where they needed to be.
