Djokovic warns Sinner: "This Rune canò beat Jannik"
Late Sunday evening Novak Djokovic won a crazy match against Holger Rune, a match that is already bidding to become one of the most spectacular of the Nitto ATP Finals 2023. The Serb è impose himself 7-6(4) 6-7(1) 6-3 after more than three sci-fi hours, once again emerging at a distance even against an opponent 16 years younger than him.
"Matches against Rune are always physically demanding, every one of our matches è a marathon. Holger has one of the best answers I have ever faced, è extraordinary. He has made progress with his serve and in his game in general", recounted Djokovic, who è is now certain to end the year as world No. 1 for the eighth time in his career.
"È a huge result, it means a lot to me – said the Serbian champion -.2 I knew I would only need one win here in Turin to be certain of finishing 2023 as No. 1. I did not want the situation to get complicated, I wanted to close the accounts now".
"Being world No. 1 è has always been a big goal of mine, è what matters most; along with the Slam tournaments. Finishing the year as No. 1 at this stage of my life è something really extraordinary", explained Nole, who on Tuesday night will face Jannik Sinner in perhaps the most anticipated match of these Finals.
"Jannik è in great form and è back from the best season of his career. Playing at home with the crowd all for him helps a lot: I saw flashes of his match against Tsitsipas, he played great", said Djokovic. Praise for Sinner, sure, but also a couple of lines to keep in mind.
"Jannik è one of the best groundstrokers seen on the circuit in the last couple of years. I never lost to him, but we had some very balanced matches". And on a comparison with Rune: "Sinner probably has a better forehand, but against me Holger played at a very high level. I think this Rune could win against Jannik and against whoever he faces on the court", concluded the No. 1.
