Jannik Sinner closed out 2023 with another record
Jannik Sinner ended 2023 with another record
Jannik Sinner ended 2023 in fourth place in the world ranking (a record for an Italian player) with a total of 6490 ATP points. È the largest points haul ever achieved by an Italian tennis player from 2009 onward and that is since the ATP has been using the current system that awards 2000 points to Slam winners and exactly half to Masters 1000 champions.
With the current 6490 points Sinner (without considering the anomalous 2022 ranking) would have been even third in 2010 behind Nadal (12450) and Federer (9145), but ahead of Djokovic who collected 6240. And still third would be in 2013 (that season third was David Ferrer with just 5800 points), 2016 (third Milos Raonic with 5450 points), 2017 (third Grigor Dimitrov with 5150) and 2018 (third Federer with 6420).
In the worst case scenario, however, with 6490 points, Sinner would have been sixth in three of the most sparkling seasons in decades: in 2009 behind Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Del Potro, in 2012 behind Djokovic, Federer, Murray, Nadal and Ferrer, and in 2020 behind Djokovic, Nadal, Thiem, Medvedev and Federer.
In second place, in this special ranking of Italians with the most ATP points in the year-end rankings, is also the 2021 Matteo Berrettini with the 4568 points of which 1200 were gained thanks to the Wimbledon final, 600 for the Madrid final and 500 for the victory at Queen's.
In third we find Sinner again with the 3350 points from 2021. In fourth again is Berrettini’s 2020 with 3075 points. In fifth again Matteo with the 2870 points obtained in 2019 and in sixth place again Sinner with the 2410 points of 2022.
If we exclude the Roman and the South Tyrolean, the first different name è that of Fabio Fognini who in 2020 (also because of the modified ranking due to the pandemic) put in the pot 2400 ATP points of which 1000 for the victory in Monte Carlo 2019. Above 2000 points we find the Berrettini of 2022 (2375 points) and the Fognini of 2018 (2315 points) and 2019 (2290 points).
