Blue women’s foil Dream Team qualifies for Paris 2024

The Italian women’s foil won silver today in Novi Sad and arithmetically detached the pass for Paris 2024. The second place obtained by the quartet composed of Alice Volpi, Arianna Errigo, Martina Favaretto and Francesca Palumbo in the team event of the World Cup stage in Novi Sad è was worth the certainty of Qualification for the next Olympic Games.

CT Stefano Cerioni’s women’s foil, which in the last season literally dominated the international scenario by winning everything at World and European Championships as an authentic Dream Team, è the first weapon of Italian fencing to win, with as many as two competitions still to be played, the ticket to the Olympics that gives Italy the right to participate in the specialty team competition and also to field the maximum number possible, three foilists, in the individual event.

The Qualification for Paris, de facto already mortgaged after the gold medal won last July in the World Championships in Milan, è was certified today in Novi Sad where, 24 hours after Alice Volpi’s individual triumph, the Italian team won silver in the team competition.

Alice Volpi, Arianna Errigo, Martina Favaretto and Francesca Palumbo were protagonists of an unstoppable march until the final lost to the United States. Earlier in the day, ruled with absolute authority the assaults before the round of 16 with Singapore (45-23) and then the quarterfinals against Germany (45-22). And even in the semifinals there was little for Japan to do, in the presence of the girls led at the back of the piste by masters Eugenio Migliore and Giovanna Trillini (of CT Cerioni’s technical staff): 45-31 was the score that gave the Azzurri success over the Japanese and the pass to the final against the USA. Here Italy always chased the U.S., surrendering 45-37 but still celebrating, from the second step of the podium, the pass to Paris with two competitions in advance.

“Congratulations to our female foilers. They are the reigning World and European team champions, they won both titles in 2022 and 2023, and they over-deserved this early Olympic Qualification. Knowing the girls, their coach Cerioni and all his staff, however, I am sure that it will not be the goal they have achieved that will lower their level of concentration. Becauseé in the last stages of the World Cup in January and February, in Paris and Cairo, women’s foil Italy will want to continue to score points to defend its first position in the Ranking”, the comment of the President of the Italian Fencing Federation, Paolo Azzi.

The’silver with a lot of Olympic pass of the Italian women’s foil joins another second place conquered in the Italian morning, in Japan, by the team of Italian foilists in turn very close to the Qualification for the Games.

There are a total of six – so far – medals arrived in this very intense World Cup weekend for Italian fencing, considering also the four individual ones yesterday with the gold of foilist Alice Volpi in Novi Sad, and the three bronzes of Edoardo Luperi in men’s foil in Tokoname, saberist Pietro Torre in Orlenas and epeeist Giulio Gaetani in Vancouver.
Missing from the roll call are just the two team epee trials in Canada, both men’s and women’s, which will end on the Italian night.
