Next Gen ATP Finals, selection criteria changes from 2024
Important Changes for the Next Gen ATP Finals
The ATP announced on Wednesday important changes regarding the Next Gen ATP Finals, the season-ending tournament where the best prospects in world tennis are showcased. As disclosed by the same body that regulates the men's professional circuit, the changes concern the tournament's age limit and holding period and will be active from 2024.
As far as the age limit is concerned, the threshold shifts by one year: if until 2023 Under-21 players could participate, from the next edition only those who have not yet reached the age of 20 will be able to play. A decision that reflects the current situation of world tennis, which sees many very young champions already in the top positions of the rankings: the idea is to give an additional showcase to players who have not yet made the decisive leap among the bigs.
The second change, on the other hand, concerns the postponement of the tournament by about a month, which from the 2024 edition will be held close to Christmas instead of at the end of November. As happened in 2023, the venue will be Jeddah, the second largest city in Saudi Arabia, but it will be played a little later, from December 18 to 22.
The Next Gen ATP Finals have been held since 2017: winning them, in chronological order, have been South Korea's Chung Yeon (inaugural edition), Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas (2018), Italy's Jannik Sinner (2019), Murcian Carlos Alcaraz (2021), American Brandon Nakashima (2022) and Serbia's Hamad Medjedovic (2023). In 2020 the event will not be held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
