Superleague ruling, Aleksander Ceferin tough

Here are the first, very harsh statements, reported by Sportmediaset’s website, of Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin after the ruling of the European Court of Justice that gave reason to the promoters of the Superleague.

"I am sad to have to speak about today’s decision of the EU Court of Justice. We will reread and consider whether to revise our position on the Superleague. È important to point out that it does not embrace the principles on which soccer is based, those of sporting merit, guaranteed only by Uefa”.

”We have never said you can’t go outside the system, but you can’t go outside and want to play national championships. We have national governments and national institutions with us. There was no green light for the Super League as it was proposed in 2021. Soccer is not è for sale", he added.

"Today’s decision by the European Court affirms that Uefa and Fifa cannot give permissions to those who want to create new projects. But we never tried to stop this project, they can create whatever they want. I’m not sure they know what they are doing, I hope they start as soon as possible but with only two clubs".

"Football remains united and we will protect our world from any project that wants to harm it. You can be either part of the system or outside, the decision è individual. Any competition within Uefa must recognize sporting merit and be subject to rules such as respecting the international calendar"

"The draft they presented today è even more closed than that of 2021, teams like Girona or Atalanta for example could not qualify. So è it is wrong to talk about open competition. Looking at their presentation we got confirmation that theirs è a closed competition, for example the national champion teams would start from a kind of third league".
