Died Giacomo Losi, Roma flag of the '50s and '60s

A very sad Sunday for Italian soccer: after a legend such as Sweden’s Kurt Hamrin, in the evening è came the news of the death of Giacomo Losi, Roma’s flag of the '50s and '60s. Announcing it è was his nephew Massimo Liofredi in a statement, the text of which we publish.

“È passed away this evening, at the age of 88, Roma’s historic captain “Er Core de Roma” Giacomo Losi. Giving the news è was his nephew and former RAI director, Massimo Liofredi, who on behalf of the family recalled the exploits of his uncle, the third player with the most appearances in the first team after Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi.

“Uncle Giacomo tonight è gone to heaven”, recalled Massimo Liofredi, “He’ remained attached until the last to the Giallorossi jersey, for which he had an immense love and which he continued to follow at every opportunity. For many years è he was the most representative player of As Roma, beaten in a photo finish by the great Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi”.  Losi leaves behind his wife Luciana Renzi and son Roberto and grandchildren.

Born in Soncino (Cremona) on September 10, 1935, Losi made his debut as a footballer at the age of 14 with the local Soncinese team in the role of wing halfback. In 1951 he was bought by Cremonese for 500,000 liras. In Cremona disputò two seasons conquering the C series and especially highlighting himself in the role of fullback, so much so that in 1953 he was bought by Roma for 8 million lire.

He made his Serie A debut in Rome against Inter on March 20, 1955. Beginning in the 1955-1956 season he became a starter for the team and remained so almost always until the end of his career. He played for Roma until 1969, collecting 386 total appearances, including 299 as captain, without ever being disciplined (he was cautioned only in his last game played). In the 1968-1969 season, with the arrival of Helenio Herrera on the Roma bench, he was sidelined after the first 8 matches and therefore left Roma at the end of the season to play his last year as a player with Tevere Roma, in Serie D. With Roma he won two Italian Cups (in 1963-1964 and 1968-1969), and the Fairs Cup in 1960-1961. In the league the best finish è was second place in 1954-1955. On September 20, 2012 è he was among the first 11 players to be inducted into the official Roma hall of fame. Losi also played for the national team (11 total appearances), making his debut on March 13, 1960 in the friendly match lost 3-1 to Spain in Barcelona. He was then fielded in all of the Azzurri team’s matches up to the 1962 World Cup in Chile, also wearing the captain’s armband at Heysel Stadium in Brussels, in the Belgium-Italy match on May 13, 1962, in which 18-year-old Gianni Rivera made his debut.

As a coach è he was a coach in Serie D for Tevere Roma (1970 – 1971). He ’ was then coach at Avellino, Turris, Lecce, Salernitana, Alessandria, Bari (with which he gained promotion to Serie B in 1976-1977), Banco di Roma, Piacenza, Casarano, Nocerina and Juve Stabia. In Rome è he was for a long time in charge of the soccer school Nuova Valle Aurelia (in the Valle Aurelia district) and also coached the National Actors”.
