All the combinations by which Jannik Sinner canò become world number 2

On Wednesday, March 6, the first Masters 1000 of 2024 begins on the California cement of Indian Wells, and Jannik Sinner gets there as world number 3 but with a chance to become number 2 by overtaking Carlos Alcaraz.

In the lead is ’è Novak Djokovic with 9675 points and he will stay there even after the tournament since he returns to play it for the first time since Covid, so after five years. Alcaraz, on the other hand, è the defending champion: last year he swept Daniil Medvedev in the final and Sinner in the semifinals.

The Spaniard has 8805 points against Sinner’s 8270 and Medvedev’s 7715. The Supertennis website published a series of combinations iguarding the fight for second place between Alcaraz, Sinner and Medvedev. The South Tyrolean can’become world No. 2 by overtaking the Murcian if:

– he wins the tournament
– loses in the final but not to Alcaraz
– he loses in the semifinals and Alcaraz  does not go beyond the quarters
– loses in the quarters or round of 16, but only if Alcaraz does not make it to the semifinals and Medvedev does not win the tournament
– exits in the first, second or third round but only if Alcaraz makes it to the eighth round at the latest and Medvedev does not win the tournament

Alcaraz, on the other hand, remains number 2 if:
– he wins the tournament
– he loses in the final and Sinner does not go beyond the semifinals
– he loses in the semifinals and Sinner  does not go beyond the quarters
– loses in the quarters and Sinner  does not go beyond the third round and Medvedev does not win the tournament

Medvedev finally returns number 2 if:
– he wins the tournament and Alcaraz and Sinner do not go beyond the quarters
