Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego, bitter doubles
Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego out
Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego were eliminated in the second round in the doubles tournament at the Indian Wells Masters 1000. The South Tyrolean and the Turinese lost to the pair formed by Spain's Marcel Granollers and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos, the number five seed, who proved their experience by winning with a score of 7-6(0) 6-3.
The first set, which was balanced, ended at the tie-break, where everything went on the side of the opponents: Granollers and Zeballos won all seven points without conceding a single one. In the second the Italian pair tried to reopen the accounts but seven consecutive points led to three (plus one) break points on the score of 2-3, and a forehand error by Sinner meant 2-4 on the third chance.
Overall, the two Spanish-speaking players were slightly more incisive during the 1 hour and 35 minutes of the match, with 78 percent of points won with the first of serve versus 66 percent others. For Sinner the tournament now continues against U.S. player Ben Shelton, while Sonego heads to Miami for the next event.
