Incredible Scottie Scheffler: triumphs and makes history
Scottie Scheffler amazes the golf world again. The world number one golfer won The Players Championship in Florida: the American è the first in history to win the tournament with the richest prize money on the PGA Tour for the second year in a row. Scheffler è on the crest of a wave: just in the past week he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, confirming his current supremacy.
At the TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course, par 72), Scheffler triumphed in a comeback with a score of 268 (67 69 68 64) strokes, -20 under par, outsprinting his compatriots Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman, all second with 269 (-19) ahead of England's Matt Fitzpatrick, 5th with 272 (-16). In the final round, with a partial round of 64 (-8) bolstered by an eagle and six birdies, no bogey, Scheffler recovered five places and è won the title.
The feat netted him $4,500,000 against a total prize pool of $25,000,000: "It's already complicated enough to win The Players once, let alone twice. I'm delighted, it wasn't easy also because of some physical problems that didn't make my days easy, but I did it".
At's eighth title on the PGA Tour (a figure that includes a Major, The Masters 2022), Scheffler è now running away in the world rankings. The American has also become the second golfer after Tiger Woods to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players multiple times. Only 54th was Francesco Molinari.
