The Chinese weekend of the Italian women swordswomen turned out to be a golden triumph for Italy led by CT Dario Chiadò, which won the team event in the women’s epee World Cup stage in Nanjing. The quartet composed of Rossella Fiamingo, Alberta Santuccio, Mara Navarria and Giulia Rizzi reached the highest step of the podium, overcoming the Chinese home team in the final in an exciting and perfect competition, confirming the success achieved in the last event in Barcelona a month ago.
The Italian women swordsmen, already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, approached the competition with determination and will to win, demonstrating an authoritative course. They overcame Israel in the round of 16 with a score of 45-30 and the United States in the quarterfinals with an impressive 42-33. The semifinal è was also flawless, with Italy maintaining and increasing its lead over Hungary until the final verdict of 45-39.
The final against China è was an apotheosis of emotions. Despite a slight disadvantage for six out of nine fractions, the Azzurri made an extraordinary comeback in the 'last "round" of assaults, with Giulia Rizzi and Rossella Fiamingo gaining a three-point lead, followed by Alberta Santuccio who sealed the victory with a further four-point advantage, leading Italy to the final victory with a score of 43-34.
Italy’s triumph in the team event crowned an extraordinary weekend for Italian women’s epee in China, following Giulia Rizzi’s individual successes and Alberta Santuccio’s bronze in Saturday’s individual competition, along with Rossella Fiamingo’s fifth place.
