Jannik Sinner gets off to a bad start but then overwhelms O’Connell
Eighth of final filed best by Sinner, who beat O’Connell in two sets and moves on to Miami. Jannik had an uncertain start, quickly finding himself down 0-40, mainly due to two forehand errors. Despite the pressure, he è managed to straighten things out by canceling three break points, but when he conceded another break point a double fault è cost him dearly.
In the eighth game, with a counterbreak, Jannik put things back on track and then closed on a crescendo, again snatching service from his rival: 6-4.
The start of the second partial was different, in which the South Tyrolean è nimbly took a 2-0 lead and then a 3-0 lead. Match now sealed for the Australian, who couldn’t make a comeback anymore, although he held on, even with a match point cancelled on 5-2 for Sinner, who in the second set closed 6-3 on the third match point overall.
