Update on Jonas Vingegaard’s condition
Just hours after the nasty crash at the Tour of the Basque Country involving, among others, Jonas Vingegaard, Team Visma-Lease a Bike, for which the Dane is racing from 2019, updated fans and insiders on the 27-year-old’s condition, confirming that he sufferedìto fractures but è conscious.
"He had a bad crash in the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, but fortunately è stable and conscious,” reads the official channels of the Dutch team. “Tests at the hospital revealed that he has a broken collarbone and several fractured ribs. He remains in the hospital as a precautionary measure. Thank you for all the messages of support".
The incident è occurred during the fourth stage of the Basque land race, starting in Etxarri Aranatz and finishing in Legutio. Along with Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) fell, also forced to retire immediately. Roglic suffered several abrasions, Evenepoel a fractured collarbone.
The serious crash caused the stage to be neutralized: the jury then decided to let the six breakaways in the lead contest it (for the record, the success è went to South African Louis Meintjes of Intermarché-Wanty), leaving the rest of the peloton to slowly reach the finish line.
