Paris-Roubaix, Van der Poel makes history
Mathieu van der Poel makes Paris-Roubaix history: the Dutch cyclist è the first world champion since 1962 to win Flanders and the French classic in one week, regained after last season’s triumph.
Van der Poel è s domination was overwhelming: with 60 km to go, the Dutchman pulled away from everyone, closing the gap behind him and flying over the pavé to victory. It's his sixth career Monument classic.
The world champion on both road and track put forth a gigantic performance, pulling away by nearly three minutes at the finish line from Jasper Philipsen, the Belgian winner of Milan-San Remo, who è won the sprint of the chasing group. Third was Mads Pedersen.
The race è was characterized by a maxi crash at the start that saw the withdrawal of two azzurri, Elia Viviani (transported to the hospital) and Jonathan Milan. Van der Poel surprised everyone by attacking at Arenberg Forest, making a first selection, and then with 59 km to go, sprinting to victory.
