Atalanta masters Anfield: the incredible numbers of Liverpool’s success
An absolutely historic success, with some mind-boggling numbers.
Atalanta mastered Anfield in a historic Europa League Thursday in which Gian Piero Gasperini’s team annihilated Liverpool. It ended 3-0 for the guests, with Gianluca Scamacca the great protagonist (double for him) and Mario Pasalic putting the final exclamation point. The Nerazzurri's feat is not limited to that, however, as the clear success against Jurgen Klopp's emblazoned Reds sets some thrilling records.
Indeed, Atalanta inflicted Liverpool's first defeat between home walls after an unbeaten run of 33 matches. Since then, in all competitions, the Reds had collected an impressive 28 wins and five draws. And that's not all: in its still young experience in the cups, in fact, the Orobica lineup boasts an almost unthinkable streak against one of Europe's most emblazoned teams. In just two official matches played at Anfield, as many victories have come: before the fresh 3-0 had come an equally clear 2-0. The previous one was held in the Champions League on Nov. 25, 2020, with goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens. This makes the Bergamasks the first Italian team in history to beat Liverpool twice in its stadium.
And there'è still more: widening the discourse to other city formations, there'è to remember an even more bombastic 1-5. It came on November 23, 2017 in the Europa League, although in that case the Nerazzurri's opponent was Everton. In other words: in Liverpool, Atalanta currently boasts three wins in three appearances in European cups, with 10 goals to its credit and only 1 conceded. Scamacca, moreover, becomes the first Italian ever to score a brace at Anfield against the Reds (at the same facility Pierluigi Casiraghi had managed to score two goals at Euro 1996 and then, of course, in the national team, playing with Italy against Russia).
