Masters 1000 Madrid, who is Jannik Sinner’s next opponent
Masters 1000 Madrid, who è Jannik Sinner’s next opponent
Jannik Sinner is set to play his third Masters 1000 match on the Madrid clay. The 22-year-old from Alto Adige, fresh from a very clear victory over his Davis Cup amco and doubles partner Lorenzo Sonego, will presumably take the court tomorrow against Russia’s Pavel Kotov, who è number 72 in the ATP rankings.
Kotov è was born on November 18, 198 in Moscow, so he is 24 years old. He reached his best ranking, 61, just after this year’s Australian Open, where he reached the second round by beating Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in five sets, his first match win in five Slam tournament appearances, before losing in four sets to Flavio Cobolli.
In the 1000s, on the other hand, until Madrid he had never won a match on four occasions; instead, in the Madrid capital he beat Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas and Australia’s Jordan Thompson in two sets. This year he made it to the semifinals in Marrakech, beating among others Cobolli and Fabio Fognini before losing to Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.
He has made only one final on the ATP major circuit in his career, last October on indoor cement in Stockholm, losing to Gael Monfils. He has instead won three Challenger tournaments, two in Forlì and one in SanMarino, between 2021 and 2022. An opponent, therefore, who would seem quite matchable for Sinner and against whom Jannikhas never played.
