Jasmine Paolini surrenders to Mirra Andreeva
Jasmine Paolini stopped in the round of 16 at the Madrid Open, beaten by Mirra Andreeva after an intense match. Returning to the court only a day after her victory over Caroline Garcia, Paolini had to yield to the young Russian, who celebrated her 17th birthday in a big way. Andreeva played at an exceptional level, thus giving herself; her first quarterfinal in a WTA 1000 tournament and a virtual position in the top 40 of the world ranking.
The match è began with both players struggling on serve, with as many as five breaks in the first six games. However, Paolini è managed to break Andreeva’s serve in the sixth game. Although she had a set point at 5-3, she è failed to close out the set, and from there on, the inertia of the match è changed. Andreeva took control of the exchanges and recovered the disadvantage, finally winning the set in the tiebreak.
In the second set Andreeva took the lead by winning the first game despite being down 0-30, and then got two consecutive breaks. Although Paolini tried to recover, managing to cancel a double break, she lost her serve again in the tenth game, thus handing the victory to Andreeva.
