Rome, Iga Swiatek first finalist

È Iga Swiatek the first finalist of the Internazionali d’Italia women’s tournament. The Polish world No. 1 beat U.S. No. 3 Coco Gauff in the semifinals with a score of 6-4 6-3 in just over an hour and three quarters of play.

The match starts badly for Swiatek who goes 0-2 losing her serve in the second game after missing two break points in the first, but she immediately recovers the break bringing herself to 2-2. Iga has two more break points that she does not exploit at 3-3 but at 4-4 she finally manages to extend then holding serve to zero to close out the first set.

New break in Swiatek’s favor at 2-2 in the second set, the Pole has two 5-2 break points but does not exploit them, saves one of the counterbreak in the next game and finally, at 5-3, closes the match by once again breaking Gauff at 15.

Iga, who lands for the third time in the finals at the Foro Italico in Rome (she won the other two in 2021 and 2022) will faceà the winner of the second semifinal between Aryna Sabalenka and Danielle Collins, with the Belarusian clearly favored since she has won all five previous direct confrontations with the American.
