Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini triumph in doubles in Rome!
Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini won the women’s doubles by beating the U.S. Coco Gauff and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe by the score of 6-3 4-6 10-8.
First set with the Italians snatching the serve three times from their opponents, two from Gauff, Errani lost it once at 5-2 but soon after the home favorites pocketed the first partial.
At 1-1 in the second set Sara again lost the serve but there’è immediately the counterbreak on Routliffe’s serve. However Errani breaks serve for the third time on 3-3, Gauff have two set points on 5-3 on Paolini serve, the azzurre save themselves but have to surrender in the next game.
It then goes to the super tie-break in which the Azzurri go down 1-4 but recover on 5-5, then again on’8-8 from 6-8, they win a match point on 9-8 and here Gauff commits a double fault making Sara and Jasmine and also the Foro Italico audience explode in joy.
The’last time two Italians won the doubles title at the home tournament was in 2012 when Sara herself triumphed along with her historical partner Roberta Vinci beating Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
