Tadej Pogacar is clear about his next goal
Tadej Pogacar so far has been unrivaled
Pink jersey since the end of the second stage, four successes in the first fifteen stages, more than six minutes ahead of the second in the overall standings on the eve of the last week: for Tadej Pogacar, the Giro 2024 è has been perfect so far, so much so that the Slovenian rider himself admits that he wants to manage his energy more in the last stages of a race he has dominated so far.
"We have a very good advantage in the standings,” the Slovenian said at a press conference during the last rest day of this edition of the Giro d'Italia. “We enter the last week with the goal of not spending too much energy, always respecting the Giro but also looking ahead to the Tour de France".
The Giro-Tour pairing hasn't succeeded since 1998, the year Marco Pantani conquered both big races, giving thrills upon thrills to fans: "I have never done the Giro and the Tour in the same year,” Pogacar explained, “but everyone says that finishing well in the Giro allows you to have a good leg in the Tour as well, and I hope that is the caseì".
In history only seven riders have succeeded in the feat of winning the Corsa Rosa and the Grande Boucle in the same year: they are Fausto Coppi (1949 and 1952), Jacques Anquetil (1964), Eddy Merckx (1970, 1972 and 1974), Bernard Hinault (1982 and 1985), Stephen Roche (1987), Miguel Indurain (1992 and 1993) and Marco Pantani (1998).
