Petro Arese's excitement after breaking a historic Italian track and field record
È dropped after 34 years one of the longest-running Italian records in athletics: Pietro Arese with 3'32"13 in the 1,500 at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo beat Gennaro Di Napoli’s historic 3'32"78, set in Rieti on Sept. 9, 1990.
The Piedmontese middle distance runner finished in eighth place in the race won by Jakob Ingebrigtsen with a time of 3'29"74 achieving the first of his seasonal goals just on the eve of the European Championships in Rome scheduled for June 7-12.
“It means a lot – said on the Federatletica website the 24-year-old from San Mauro Torinese coached by Silvano Danzi in Varese, who was able to take almost a second off his previous personal best of 3’33”11 achieved at the World Championships in Budapest last August – Getting to fall short of an athletics legend like Gennaro Di Napoli è something that è entered me. I can only say thank you to all the people who were with me on the track and held my hand for 1,500 meters, those who are there and those who are no longer there’”.
“Now with these times you canò reason for something really good: è it’s all the result of the mentality I’ve always had of doing things one step at a time, without overdoing it, always looking for goals within my reach. Having more than 100 Azzurri at the European Championships will be incredible: 116 athletes who over the years have shown great team spirit. We will give each other so much support”.
