Wimbledon: Jannik Sinner has reasons to smile even on break day
Even a day off can bring good news.
Jannik Sinner has made a great start to his Wimbledon 2024 adventure, after a fine victory in the all-Italian challenge with Matteo Berrettini and an easy three-set win over Miomir Kecmanovic. There are no further commitments for him on London's grass on Saturday, but it could equally prove to be a good day for the talented South Tyrolean. Especially as the tournament continues, and his eyes will be wide open to see what future opponents will be up to.
For Sinner è in fact already secured a place in the Wimbledon round of 16, while the same cannot be said for the one who will face him. In fact, it is one between Denis Shapovalov and Ben Shelton, who were forced to stop on Friday due to rain that hit their match after just five games, with the American leading 3-2.
This means that the match will end a day later than Sinner’s, who will therefore benefit from about 24 more hours of rest than his next opponent. A not insignificant advantage, in a tournament like Wimbledon known among other things for the great amount of energy it makes its protagonists expend.
"What have I learned over the years? To make friends with the 'grass … (laughs), to be very 'kind'to the grass: at the beginning I was struggling so much toò year after year I feel I have improved. Let's see what will happen this time. See you in the next round", Sinner had hotly declared after his agile victory (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) over Kecmanovic. And now the weather and calendar also seem to be playing to his advantage.
