Roma, Rui Patricio’s heir is Australian: Mathew Ryan official
The new goalkeeper è arrived.
Roma soccer market: the heir of Rui Patricio è arrived. The new Giallorossi goalkeeper è is Australian and answers to the name of Mathew Ryan. Arriving in the capital on a zero-parameter basis after being released by AZ Alkmaar, the 32-year-old will be called upon to flank Svilar, who already earned a starting jersey last season.
"AS Roma è is pleased to announce the purchase of Mathew Ryan on a permanent basis,” reads the Giallorossi club website. “Goalkeeper born in 1992, an Australian national, Ryan boasts more than 300 appearances in Europe between domestic leagues and UEFA competitions. He has played in Belgium, Spain, England, Denmark and the Netherlands. With Australia, he has played in three World Cups: 2014, 2018 and 2022. In Giallorossi, he will wear the number 98 jersey. Welcome to Roma, Mat!".
Ryan's zero-parameter signing literally goes to cover the departure of Rui Patricio, since the Portuguese had also in turn parted ways with Roma on June 30 because his contract had reached its natural expiration.
Ryan è the third Australian goalkeeper in Serie A history, after Zeljko Kalac (who established himself at Perugia before moving to AC Milan, carving out a space for himself at times greater than his initial expectations) and Jess Vanstrattan. Less fortunate was the latter's Italian parenthesis, consumed between Verona, Carrarese and Ancona before a signing at Juventus where, however, he never accrued any official presence.
