Tour de France, 17th stage to Richard Carapaz. Tadej Pogacar attacks again
Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, triumphant in the 2019 Giro d’Italia, won the 17th stage of the Tour de France, his first in his career, by a breakaway, from Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateau to Superdevoluy of 177.8 km, with a third-category uphill finish and two more Grands Prix de la Montagne, one second and one first-category, in the last 35 km.
Behind the 31-year-old EF Education-EasyPost rider, detached by 37 seconds after being overtaken by Carapaz with about 15 kilometers to go on the Col du Noyer, was Team Jayco Alula’s British rider Simon Yates. Third at 57 seconds was Movisar Spaniard Enric Mas.
Behind these men, all part of the day’s breakaway, there’s still been a battle in the top group with yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar who, seeing rival Jonas Vingegaard in trouble, still attacked and detached him on the Noyer, then the Dane, along with Remco Evenepoel, caught the Slovenian in the descsa.
Evenepoel then attacked in turn to gain seconds on Vingegaar and in fact è got to 7’13” from Carapaz, while Pogacar again pulled away from Vingegaard on the final ramp getting to 7’23” two seconds ahead of the Dane. In the overall standings the guy with the topknot now has 3’11” over Vingegaard and 5’09” over Evenepoel.
