Mercedes, Toto Wolff sets target and issues challenge to Ferrari
Mercedes, Toto Wolff sets the target and throws down the challenge to Ferrari
During an interview given to the microphones of "Speedweek", Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, among other topics, commented on the recent positive results achieved by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and the ambitions of the Brackley team ahead of the second half of the season.
"It's human nature to set one's expectations based on the results just obtained. It was clear that Budapest, with its heat and asphalt, was not going to be very good for us and would probably favor other teams. So it è positive to have won a hard-fought podium. I'm looking forward to Spa and I hope we can maintain this level of performance" began the Mercedes team principal.
"It's difficult to set targets becauseè the situationè is constantly changing depending on the various updates, but a realistic optimum scenario, as things stand now, would be third place in the Constructors’ Championship. It's hard to catch Red Bull and McLaren now è the benchmark. So I think it would be a good goal to beat Ferrari, but it will not beà easy" added the Austrian manager.
"I am not sure we were faster than Max, we beat him on the track, but probably not in terms of race pace. You have to però recognize that McLaren è now the best car in all conditions. They deserved the one-two. It's great that another team made this leap and managed to take first and second place. It's good for all of us, but we were not good in these conditions, we were not up to them" concluded Toto Wolff.
