Olympics: crazy gold of the Italian women’s epee, silenced the French!
Crazy gold of the Italian epee women in the final of the team tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics. After much mockery è finally came the medal of the most valuable metal even for fencing: to give it the quartet composed of Alberta Santuccio, Giulia Rizzi, Rossella Fiamingo and Mara Navarria. Italy came out on top after a heart-stopping competition against the quartet of France, won in a comeback and overtime, at the last stroke 30-29 thanks to a splendid final series by Santuccio.
For Italy è the 11th medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the third gold. There are four silver medals and four bronze medals as well. Also celebrating the Azzurre was Giovanni Malagò, CONI president: "We are moved, we are grateful to these girls. They won against everything and everyone, they had great heads. We took back something we deserved in the past days".
Italy won a total of 40 medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting a new record for the number of metals placed around its neck in a single edition of the Olympic Games. Taking the highest step; top step of the podium in Japan were Marcell Jacobs – Men’s 100 meters, Gianmarco Tamberi – Men’s high jump, Massimo Stano – Men’s 20 km march, Antonella Palmisano – Women’s 20 km march, Men’s 4×100 relay – Lorenzo Patta, Marcell Jacobs, Eseosa Desalu, Filippo Tortu, Federica Cesarini and Valentina Rodini – Rowing, women’s lightweight doubles, Francesco Lamon, Simone Consonni, Jonathan Milan and Filippo Ganna – Cycling, men’s team pursuit, Luigi Busà – Karate, kumite -75kg and Vito Dell’Aquila – Taekwondo, -58kg.
