Paris 2024 Olympics, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in history: ‘Unique emotion’

An unprecedented gold medal, welcomed with irrepressible joy by the protagonists.

Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics by winning the women’s doubles final against Russia’s (on court with neutral flag) Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider. It was a historic success, as never had Italian tennis won a medal of the most precious metal at the Games. And the two blue women did not hide their irrepressible enthusiasm.

The victory, in itself é historic, turned out to be also epic in the way it è matured. In fact, Errani and Paolini won at the tie-break after losing the first set also rather sharply. Unstoppable forò their recovery, as evidenced by the final score of the match: 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. For Errani it was a long-sought goal, for Paolini the exclamation point on a season that had already seen her reach the finals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

"This è crazy, the way it è went. We started very badly in the first set,” Sara Errani admitted hotly, to the microphones of 'Eurosport' -then we stayed there and somehow managed to pull ourselves up. È it was hard, but we are too happy". In the same vein Jasmine Paolini: "&It was very difficult, I came in very tense and at the beginning I struggled a lot. Then è some tension went away and I started to play better. We both grew and è it was really hard, but now we are so happy. This emotion è really unique".

Italy won a total of 40 medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting a new record for the number of metals placed around its neck in a single edition of the Olympic Games. Standing on the highest step; top step of the podium in Japan were Marcell Jacobs – Men’s 100 meters, Gianmarco Tamberi – Men’s high jump, Massimo Stano – Men’s 20 km march, Antonella Palmisano – Women’s 20 km march, Men’s 4×100 relay – Lorenzo Patta, Marcell Jacobs, Eseosa Desalu, Filippo Tortu, Federica Cesarini and Valentina Rodini – Rowing, women’s lightweight doubles, Francesco Lamon, Simone Consonni, Jonathan Milan and Filippo Ganna – Cycling, men’s team pursuit, Luigi Busà – Karate, kumite -75kg and Vito Dell’Aquila – Taekwondo, -58kg.
