Paris 2024 Olympics: first loss for Settebello to Greece
Olympics Paris 2024, water polo: Italy-Greece 8-9
After beating the United States, Croatia and Montenegro, comes the first knockout for men's water polo Italy at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sandro Campagna’s lineup, in fact, had to surrender 8-9 to Greece, thus seeing its chances of qualifying as first in Group A fade away once and for all.
The Settebello è always forced to chase the Hellenes, except for the 3-2 lead obtained at the beginning of the second quarter. The first half ended with the Blue team down by one goal (6-5). In the second half, came mistakes on both sides with both teams failing a penalty shot each. The mockery for Italy came with 2:53 to go with Fountoulis scoring the final 8-9. In the final, the Azzurri also had a chance to equalize, but Di Fulvio hit the post wide.
The Settebello, depending on how Croatia-United States will finish, will close the round in second or third place. In the quarterfinals, however, the Sandro Campagna-coached team will face one between Australia and Hungary.
In this Paris expedition, Italy has already collected 25 medals, including 9 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze.
