Paris 2024 Olympics, Nadia Battocletti loses bronze: Kenya appeal accepted, rebuttal rejected
The hoax of the 5000 meters
No more bronze for Nadia Battocletti,. The Italian had been ranked third in the 5,000-meter final at the Paris 2024 Olympics because of the disqualification of Faith Kipyegon, who crossed the finish line second behind newly crowned Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet (both Kenyans). After an appeal, however, the original ranking è was reinstated. Italy in turn filed a counter-appeal but it è was rejected.
Nadia Battocletti’s third-place finish stemmed from a disqualification to Faith Kipyegon, who was second but after pushing Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay. Thus the silver had gone to Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and the bronze to the Italian athlete. Filed an appeal, Kenya later won it.
"Objectively with 1-2 laps to go they put up a fight for 30-40 meters. I'll stick to what the appeals chamber will say, but we've seen athletes disqualified because they touched their opponent's shoulder. They really beat themselves up for 30-40 meters. I did athletics, and in competition I used to beat myself up. Because in competition you beat yourself, you move, you push yourself. But back then nothing happened, with this new course it would seem strange to me if they went back", he had told 'Sky Sport' the president of Fidal, Stefano Mei.
Nadia Battocletti's would have represented the first medal obtained by Italy in athletics in this edition of the Games, but the Trentino middle-distance runner's performance remains historic. In fact, her time of 14:31.64 represents the new national record in the discipline.
