Escape bronze to Turkey by Daniele Santarelli
Bronze Brazil
Escape the bronze to Daniele Santarelli’s Turkey, which after having succumbed to Italy in the semifinals also lost to Brazil and thus had to settle for fourth place.
The Greenoros got the better of the red and white women in four sets (3-1: 25-21, 27-25, 22-25, 25-15). After silver in Tokyo, the South Americans put bronze around their necks, as they did in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000.
After winning the first two sets (25-21, 27-25), saving a set ball in the second, the Brazilians loosened their grip and let slip chances that could have allowed them to close out the match. But at 2-1 they went on a rampage, winning the fourth set 25-15.
Among the Turks, an irrepressible Teresa Vargas (26 points, 3 walls) and the less expected Derya Cebecioclu (14 points) were not enough.
