The national women’s water polo team ends the Paris 2024 Olympic tournament in sixth place. Setterosa yielded only on penalties 15-12 to Hungary, vice world champions at Doha 2024, in the final for fifth place. Regulation time had ended on 11-11, after the Magyars had recovered a two-goal disadvantage in the closing stages of the fourth half.
Hat tricks for Marletta and Bianconi, one goal each for Galardi, Avegno, Palmieri, Cocchiere and Viacava. "We played a good tournament, growing game after game – admits coach Carlo Silipo – There's a solid base and young girls ready to be gradually included in the group. I am confident for the future".
A tournament of growth for the azzurre, all at their Olympic debut except for Tabani and Bianconi. After defeats in the debut with France and the United States, the fine 12-8 success over Greece decisive for qualification, before the stop with Spain, which proved to be irrelevant. In the quarters the Setterosa è surrendered only to the strength of the Netherlands, which took bronze and ousted the United States from the Olympic podium for the first time in history. Gold medal went to Spain, victorious 11-9 over Australia.
Prior to today's match, the last precedent between Hungary and Italy dated back to the quarterfinals of the European Championships in Eindhoven last Jan. 9, when the Setterosa overcame the Magyars 12-11.
