The numbers speak for themselves: è the happiest year ever for Italian tennis on the ATP circuit. Driven by Jannik Sinner, the Italian movement continues to set record after record in this fairytale 2024: with Lorenzo Sonego’s victory in the Winston-Salem tournament, Italy has reached 10 tournaments won on the Atp circuit, three more than the previous record set in 1977 and equaled in 2021.
Not only Jannik Sinner: confirming the depth of the movement are Matteo Berrettini’s three wins and the successes of Luciano Darderi and Lorenzo Sonego, as well as four other finals that also featured Lorenzo Sonego and Flavio Cobolli.
Also noteworthy is the growth of Italians in the ATP rankings: there are now seven Italian tennis players in the top 50 in the world, just before the start of the US Open. Sinner è tops the ranking, Lorenzo Musetti è 18th, Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli are in 30th and 31st, Luciano Darderi è 37th, Matteo Berrettini è 44th and Lorenzo Sonego è 48th.
Also in the top 100 are Fabio Fognini, 71st, and Luca Nardi, 90th. Also not to be forgotten is Mattia Bellucci, now one step away from entering the top 100 in the world. And then there's Musetti's Olympic medal in Paris 2024 to seal the magical year for Italian men's tennis.
