US Open, Jasmine Paolini clears major hurdle
US Open, Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16
Jasmine Paolini’s run at the US Open does not stop: in the third round of the women’s tournament, the best Italian in the WTA rankings defeated in two sets Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, number 32 in the world, who until this morning had not yet lost a set. 6-3, 6-4 the partials in favor of Paolini, who completed the match in one hour and thirty-six minutes of play.
In the next round, Jasmine Paolini will face Karolina Muchova, an athlete from the Czech Republic who defeated Russian Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-2, playing practically at the same time as the tennis player who won, along with Sara Errani, the gold medal in doubles at Paris 2024.
Jasmine Paolini had overcome, in the previous rounds, Canadian Bianca Andreescu in three sets, closing 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4, and another tennis player from the Czech Republic, Karolina Pliskova, who was forced to withdraw due to physical problems only six minutes after the start of the second round match.
Jasmine Paolini's 2024 is certainly a year to remember: in addition to her successes in doubles with Sara Errani (Paris 2024 and, last May, at the Internazionali di Roma), the athlete born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana on Jan. 4, 1996, played in singles in the slam finals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon, surrendering only to Iga Swiatek in the first case and Barbora Krejcikova in the second.
