Leonardo Fornaroli graduates as F3 champion
Italy's Leonardo Fornaroli (Trident) won the Formula 3 championship after finishing third at the Italian Grand Prix d'Italia in Monza won by Frenchman Sami Meguetounif (Trident).
Fornaroli, long a step away from winning the title, got the better of Gabriele Mini (Prema) in the drivers’ standings, who on the Lombard circuit è finished second.
Fornaroli risked losing the title when with two laps to go è he was overtaken by Australian Christian Mansell (ART) but è then managed to overtake him at the last corner.
Fornaroli, 19, born in Piacnza, è became the first driver in F3 history to win the title without having won a single race during the season. He surpassed Mini in the standings by only two points (150 to 148).
"I managed to snatch the title in the'last corner of the last race…. At the beginning of the season we knew we had the potential, but we told ourselves it would be difficult to fight for the title. I can not believe it", said the new F3 champion.
