US Open, Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli leave the scene
A defeat perhaps not entirely expected and one instead predictable for the Italians in the US Open men’s singles. Matteo Arnaldi, world number 30, è was beaten with a score of 7-5 6-2 7-6 by number 32, Australian Jordan Thompson in two hours and 33 minutes of play. Flavio Cobolli, world number 31, è instead had to surrender to Russian number 5 Daniil Medvedev with a score of 6-3 6-4 6-3 in two hours and 18 minutes of play.
Too bad for the break he suffered on 5-5 in the first set after having a break point on 1-0 and for the partial five consecutive games cashed from 2-1 in the second set by Arnaldi who è also went up 4-2 in the third set only to be immediately recovered and eventually lose the tir-break 7-5 after being up 3-0 and then 4-2. Simply put, Matteo è was almost always ahead in the score in the individual sets, except for much of the second set, but he did not win a single one.
Cobolli è went ahead by a break in both the first and third sets, in the first he è got overtaken and never recovered, suffered a break decisive for the fate of the second set on’1-1 and finally in the third, after being ahead 2-0, while making another break that brought him back to 3-3 he no longer held a service game losing four out of four A performance however of a high level of the very gritty 22-year-old native of Florence and then transplanted to Rome.
