Matteo Arnaldi, Matteo Berrettini (who returns to the Azzurri after a long absence from the Davis Cup), Simone Bolelli, Flavio Cobolli (on his first call-up) and Andrea Vavassori are the five athletes summoned by non-player captain Filippo Volandri for the Davis Cup group stage matches against Brazil, Belgium and the Netherlands scheduled in Bologna between Sept. 11 and 15. Absent are Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner, who both agreed to the decision with Volandri.

"Today’s choices are the result of the reflections and comparisons of these days with the whole team, both present and absent,” said the Italian captain. “With respect to the latter, as always we have tried to accord the needs of the team with those of my boys, because we have theé goal of passing the round even while protecting the physical and psychological health to remain competitive until the end of the season".

"As for Jannik,” he added, “who has given us his availability for the final part of the Bologna engagement, in agreement with the federal leadership and the boy’s staff, we have decided to relieve him from the convocation allowing him a full recovery, and have the full team from the initial match".

"Lorenzo has manifested to us the need" to stop for a few days, after the tour de force to which he è underwent in recent months, also for the participation in the’Olympics, and, again in agreement with the Federation, I decided for his and the team’s sake to allow him to recover an optimal psychophysical condition" added Volandri speaking of Musetti.

"Therefore,” concluded the captain, who led the Italian team to success in Davis in 2023, for the first time in 47 years, “the group that will take the court in Bologna will still be strong, motivated and at this moment the best equipped to face the opposing teams and to earn the Malaga Finals".
