Darren Cahill explains tears after Jannik Sinner’s triumph
The words of Darren Cahill
Darren Cahill, super coach of Jannik Sinner, è burst into tears after the world number one’s triumph at the Us Open. "My reaction to Sinner’s victory è rather like that of a very exhausted old man" he explained to the microphones of Espn.
"In Jannik’s team I am not the most important coach, which è Simone Vagnozzi, but I am the one who has the most experience,” the Australian stressed. In the last four months a lot of things have happened within the group and many of them fell on my shoulders. I tried to keep Jannik's sense of things and focus on what our goals were, I kept telling him over and over again that he'd done nothing wrong's and that whatever happened he should stay with his head held high".
"We managed to go through this period, certainly not without stress – continued the super coach of the blue -. Probably the reaction we had after the victory was also due to that. I also have to talk about Jannik as a person. My job was to help him mature and become the person everyone looks up to, a figure from whom children can draw inspiration. Even before the finals I told him that the way he è behaved in the last few weeks showed honestyà and resilience, he must be very proud of himself. Now it è right that he should enjoy himself, he deserves it so much".
Fitting comment on the differences between the final at the Australian Open and the final at the Us Open: "There were differences. In Australia it was the first final of a Slam and it was more tense. Maybe there were even more expectations because he had already beaten Medvedev a couple of times. Before the New York final we were talking with André Agassi in the locker room. We were commenting on his game, his mentality and his composure even in big moments. Even when è he was tested in the third set, I sensed that he was convinced he could come back into the game, which he è then was able to do. He has this champion mentality that many players don’t have. He, on the other hand, was è born with it and loves those situations and those moments".
