Giro 2025, Mauro Vegni winks at three pedal bigwigs
Mauro Vegni dreams big for 2025
The route of the Giro d'Italia 2025 has not yet been unveiled, but the director of the Pink Race, Mauro Vegni, is already dreaming big when it comes to the possible big names at the start: the idea of having Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel at the starting line tickles the fancies of the person in charge of the most important Italian stage race in no small way.
"The Giro è the jewel in the crown, to have the possibility of having a Pogacar, a Vingegaard and an Evenepoel together at the starting ribbons would mean bingo,” Vegni told 'Radio Sportiva'. Però we know well that the appointments become more and more pressing and the performances stressful as the sponsors, the teams".
"It will serveà to find ways to do more elite cycling. Fewer races but with all the greats participating,” explained the Giro director. “One thing people miss è knowing who è the best of the season: if one does the Giro and one does the Tour… Cycling needs direct confrontations. The cycling of the past teaches us that great dualisms are the history of the sport. Without them, è hard to make comparisons".
Pogacar competed for the first time in 2024 in the Giro d'Italia, winning it by an impressive 9 minutes and 56 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Daniel Martinez. Vingegaard, a two-time Tour winner, on the other hand, has never participated in the Corsa rosa while Evenepoel has not è been lucky on Italian roads: in fact, he è retired in his only two participations, in 2021 and 2023.
