Mats Wilander goes direct on Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner, Mats Wilander in no uncertain terms
From the columns of 'L'Equipe', for which he directly edits a column on what is happening in the world of tennis, Mats Wilander unabashedly exposes himself on Jannik Sinner, two days after the current world No. 1’s triumph at the US Open. The Swede, in particular, expects an upcoming turnaround from a character standpoint from the San Candido champion.
"Jannik’s charisma will grow with time and results,” Wilander judged.
At the moment this charisma è defined by the game he shows on the court, for me the best and most complete. If possible, I would like him to be more 'Italian' and less 'Austrian' with a more seething character and not that everything-proof coldness".
To grow as an athlete, è it is imperative to confront level rivals who always raise the bar, and for Wilander the name is there'è already: "It's imperative that he grow in rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz,” he said, “with the Spaniard getting to say 'I'm there too' in the near future".
Wilander, like Sinner, won the Australian Open and U.S. Open in the same year (1988), additionally adding Roland Garros. He also won four other Grand Slam tournaments: 1982 Roland Garros, 1983 and 1984 Australian Open, and 1985 Roland Garros. Unforgettable were his challenges with Ivan Lendl, a great rival of those years.
