After Udinese's comeback win over Parma (3-2), which jumped the Friulians to the top of the standings, Monday's fourth day of Serie A ended with former Marco Baroni's Lazio's narrow victory over Paolo Zanetti's Verona. At the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the Biancocelesti overcame the Gialloblù 2-1 thanks to goals by Dia and Castellanos, Tengstedt scored the goal for the Scaligeri.
Lazio got off to a strong start and after five minutes found the lead: Zaccagni imbued for Dia, who pointed at Dawidowicz, returned to the right and kicked at the first post, beating Montipò. Immediately the reaction of Verona, which equalizes after only two minutes: Kastanos verticalizes centrally for Tengstedt, who, one-on-one with Provedel, does not miss. At 20' the biancocelesti go back ahead with Castellanos who turns on the volley on a corner by Zaccagni.
In the resumption, the hosts came close to a hat trick at 62' but Montipò overcame first on Dia and then on Nuno Tavares. At 74' è again the Scaligeri goalkeeper kept Verona alive by repelling a Tchaouna conclusion into the corner. In the 80th, however, è Lazzari saved Lazio, immolating himself on a sure-shot conclusion by Tchatchoua.
With this success, Lazio bypasses Verona in the standings, moving up to sixth place, on 7 points, behind Inter, Juventus and Torino, paired on 8. Verona remains stuck in seventh place with 6 points, as do Empoli and Atalanta.
