Tadej Pogacar continues to write cycling history. After the Giro d'Italia-Tour de France one-two punch, the Slovenian outfielder was crowned world champion in Zurich after a solo breakaway of more than 50 kilometers before crossing the finish line ahead of Australian Ben O'Connor, second at 34" and Dutch Mathieu Van der Poel, third at 58".
"For this World Championship I put a lot of pressure on myself,” admitted the UAE Emirates rider at the end of the race. Today I was also feeling the team’s, because I knew we couldn’t make a mistake. We came here to win".
"I can’t believe what è happened,” added the Slovenian. “I never gave up until the finish line. At one point the race was taking a turn that was worrying me. In those moments I do not know what went through my head, but I thought, 'Something I have to do'. Fortunately I attacked, making the right choice".
"After the Tour de France I realized that I had to focus on one goal: the World Championship" concluded Pogacar, who with the victory at the World Championship equaled Eddy Merckx and Stephen Roche, the only other two cyclists in history to have hit the Giro-Tour-World Championship hat trick.
