America's Cup, Ineos Britannia halves gap from New Zealand
Ineos Britannia won both races today in Barcelona in its challenge with New Zealand to win the America's Cup, halving the gap with the defender who remains ahead 4-2. The two boats will return to the water next Friday.
In the first of the day’s two races, the New Zealanders paid dearly for a fall from the foils at the start, leaving the rival boat free to reel in, which crossed the finish line a full 1 minute and 18 seconds ahead.
In the second, with more complex marine weather conditions, Ineos è started better but è was always within reach of the New Zealanders, managing to dominate by only 7 seconds and reopen the challenge that after the initial 4-0 seemed already marked.
In fact, on Oct. 12 New Zealand had won both races by 41” and 27” over Ineos. On the 13th it had won the third with 52” and on the 14th the fourth with 23”. Now the challengers are back in the running for a trophy that Britain invented but has never won.
